*Nehemia's Story

A troubled beginning:

After his parents’ divorce, Nehemia* was raised by his mum and stepdad in a tense home environment due to his stepdad’s drinking. By grade 8, Nehemia began drinking at school parties, and the situation escalated when he moved in with his dad, who also battled with alcohol issues.

Choosing a new path:

Nehemia drifted between family members, often feeling out of place. He spent a year trying to get his life together through work and TAFE but finally decided to go to Teen Challenge QLD.

He says "I didn’t go to Teen Challenge just to get sober—I went to find a new direction. I turned 21 there, which was a strange experience, but the support I found made it feel right.”

Embracing a Fresh Start:

“My first day at Teen Challenge QLD was challenging, especially as the only black person there. But I started to see it as a fresh start, even though I missed the comfort of my family and community. My grandfather was an indigenous leader who fought for land rights, so I carried a lot of pride and responsibility with me. My mentor, Craig Lyons, helped me find my place and fit in. Craig treated me like everyone else—he just kept it real, and that respect meant a lot.”

Overcoming setbacks:

While setbacks can be disheartening, Nehemia’s story highlights how the right support can pave the way to a fulfilling future. With his mentor’s guidance, Nehemia remained sober for two years after his first time at Teen Challenge, but he faced a relapse after revisiting old connections and influences.

Breaking free from addiction is tough, and the journey to recovery is often filled with obstacles, but your support lays a strong foundation for change, as Nehemia’s story reveals.

When he realised he needed help again, he returned to Teen Challenge.

“Teen Challenge QLD welcomed me back without hesitation, giving me a fresh start that turned my life around.”

A new future and giving back:

Through resilience and determination, Nehemia has built a beautiful future. He has been sober for ten years, is happily married with two young children, and works in support services, inspiring others with his journey.

“It feels amazing to be a positive influence, giving back to others like Teen Challenge gave to me."

It’s because of the generosity of people like you that Nehemia found hope and healing.

“I felt supported at Teen Challenge, even as I navigated tough cultural differences. They were there for me when I needed it most.”

We are so grateful for your support and ask that you continue building new futures with us in 2025.
